Anime Aliens is a Sacramento punk band. The artist reached out to me after shooting the live action footage themselves. They wanted something inspired by older music videos which were shot on VHS. Aside from that, I had complete creative control. Leaning into the band’s name, I added in footage from the film “Defenders of Space.” I wanted everything to feel over the top and fun so I alternated adding the film to the live action footage and vice versa. I added the footage using After Effects’ Rotobrush to mask out the sections I needed. After the shots were assembled and the editing was complete, I used Premiere Pro to give the digital footage a VHS feel. I also created the final video in 4:3 aspect ration and at VHS quality to further lean into it.
